Now then! A nice, genuine US-made Stanley Bailey No.4 from the mid-1920s, identified as a Type 13 by the U.S. PAT. APR-19-10 casting mark and other period features.
This one has lived a proper working life. Bought it at a flea market in a poor state and have since cleaned, serviced and brought it back into working order. The original rosewood tote has a solid repair with epoxy and is completely sound.
It isn’t a collector’s piece (but could be).

The iron is a later Record replacement, and some other components have been changed during its working life. Cap iron and chip breaker aren’t correct. All been changed many moons ago, though, because everything has worn together in tandem. As such, I’ve left it that way
What it is, however, is a genuine 100-year-old Stanley that works exactly as it should. The sole is sound, the adjustments work properly and it takes a lovely shaving. I’ve been using it for some time but just have too many “keepers”.
An honest old Stanley for the bench, rather than the display cabinet. Nice old thing.
