Description
Seymour Smith & Son worked out of Oakville, Connecticut from 1866 having moved around the USA in previous years from being founded in 1850. They were predominantly known for tools and hardware. The spokeshave has a nice ornate front piece and is approximately 9″ in length. The blade is about 1 3/4″ wide and the maker’s mark Seymour Smith and Son is just visible. It has been sharpened and the body lightly cleaned. I’m unsure if the brass screw is original as I’ve seen examples with both brass and steel screws. Comfortable in the hands to use and a little more delicate than some of the slightly, more common mainstream spokeshaves. Would make a nice addition for any collector.
